First Glance

The first glance

a spark, when two people know

a conversation will be started

further looks will be shared

awkward smiles

the crevices and corners

of your lips accentuated

the content and interest

lit like a fire

about to catch and burn

creating a fury of heat

that grows warmer with each sentence

with each question

of small talk

wanting to advance to bigger things

the lack of courage the limitation

wanting to romanticise the idea

of what could be

not what is

the first ‘hello’,

scarier than thinking

about your life together

frozen in time until its goodbye

the connection unplugged

switch off like a light

the spark that was.
