Scoreboard
If you’ve never had to deny your privilege,
There is no place where it has been questioned,
Our labelling of society looming overhead,
a scoreboard of reality,
The winners already deemed.
5 points to white
4 points to male
3 points for straight
2 for able bodied
1 for those free of mental illness
Although our prescription maybe different
our eye-ware is uniform
The quest for hierarchy conquered humanity
‘hello’ & ‘goodbye’, equations for privilege,
Aiming to determine where we fall and how far,
For failure of our social test is graded before its begun.
Our carbon copy idea of others
contradicts the fingerprint,
An antonym of our being,
From our heart to bone we are equal ‘the same’
Beyond, builds the basis for bigotry
Our brains the same, creating separation.
The construction of the privilege concept
keeps people inept to accept differences,
The social stratum of minorities,
Our innate desire to place ourselves above others
Continues to conquer the definition of human.
Being susceptible to weakness, and to show better qualities
Of humankind such as kindness, defy privilege.
Opposing universes of traits, one hateful fabrication
The other the desired natural.
To recognise privilege is key,
We have to agree,
As to refute this dispute is the wrong route.
How can we detach our prejudices
from our own skin, skinniness and sexualities.
To relearn is to first learn about ourselves,
Our progress in prejudice precedes precedented expectations,
Continuing this momentum requires effort from all
As we are not far from done, but not far enough away
from where we began.
Continue to acknowledge your privilege,
as acknowledgement is the beginning of accepting.
